welcome to the

FRANKLIN SPECIAL SCHOOL DISTRICT

excellence in teaching and learning for all

The FSSD is a K-8 school system with approximately 3,850 students enrolled. Students are served by eight schools: four elementary schools, one intermediate school, one middle school, and a K-8 school. The FSSD Board of Education has proudly committed itself to meeting and/or exceeding the state’s teacher-pupil ratio requirements, with ratios at: 1 to 20 in kindergarten through third grade, 1 to 22 in fourth grade, and 1 to 25 in grades 5-8. All schools and the Central Office are accredited by the AdvancED, one of the largest and most esteemed school accreditation agencies in the country.

SINCE 1906

The Franklin Special School District gets its unique name from a Special Act of the state legislature that provides the Board of Education its own taxing authority, enabling the schools to be funded appropriately in order to maintain “Excellence in Teaching and Learning for All.”

ImageThe FSSD Transportation Department transports students safely to and from school and school activities; drivers are expected to display a positive attitude, strong character, willingness to learn, and to be cooperative and courteous with other school personnel, parents, and students.

The Transportation Department engages in continuous improvement. As concerns and special requests are presented, the Department reviews each one with safety and efficiency as the number one priority of the decision-making process. Improvements are made based on student safety and the needs of the school district. Scheduled and unscheduled group employee meetings are utilized to seek out improvement processes. Through group employee meetings, each employee is encouraged to share their thoughts and ideas to better serve the needs of parents, students and Transportation Department for an improved customer service environment. Diligent performance in serving the needs of students, parents, and school personnel establishes a good public image. The Transportation Department contributes to the district vision of “Excellence in Teaching and Learning for All” by offering a safe environment to all students, so they arrive and depart from school prepared and ready to learn.

Riding the Bus
The FSSD Transportation Department oversees a fleet of 31 buses which carry kindergarten through 8th grade students to eight schools. All bus drivers are trained in CPR and first aid and are provided ongoing annual training for school bus operation, as required by the state. Getting your child safely to school is of utmost concern to the FSSD and many safety precautions are in place. If your child will be riding the bus please note the following:
  • Students should be waiting for their bus at least 5 minutes prior to the scheduled pick-up time. Bus times are approximate due to factors such as variable ridership, traffic tie-ups, mechanical difficulties, etc.
  • Students should stand at least 5 feet away from the bus stop staging area. This is for your child’s safety so that they are not in harm’s way of other vehicle traffic.
  • Students should NEVER walk behind a school bus while boarding or deboarding the bus. The bus driver needs to have a clear view of the student at all times.
  • Video monitoring equipment is on all buses to address student behavior issues.
