The vision of the Franklin Special School District (FSSD) is “Excellence in Teaching and Learning for All.” From a school counseling perspective, educational excellence means providing a counseling program that facilitates academic, social/emotional, and college/career readiness standards, ensuring that every student receives program benefits. This means providing a program that is comprehensive in scope, preventative in design, and developmental in nature.
The mission of the FSSD counseling program is to support all students by using a comprehensive, developmental, and preventative approach to teach academic, social/emotional, and college/career readiness skills necessary to the achieve quality learning and life-long success.
School Counseling Services
The counseling program is an integral part of the total school environment. It is implemented by licensed Professional School Counselors with the support of teachers, administrators, support personnel, students, parents, and community members. School counselors are specially trained to address the issues within our schools that have a substantial impact on student learning. Serving as leaders and advocates, school counselors work collaboratively to provide services in a proactive, developmental and preventative manner. Today’s school counselors are vital members of the education team and provide a wealth of services to support students. Parents who have questions or comments about curriculum content should contact the counselor at the school where their children attend.
Direct Services (in-person interactions between school counselors and students) included in the FSSD school counseling delivery system are:
- School counseling core curriculum: This core curriculum consists of structured lessons to provide all students with the knowledge, attitudes and skills appropriate for their developmental levels. The school counseling core curriculum is delivered throughout the school’s overall curriculum and is systematically presented by school counselors in collaboration with other professional educators in K-8 classroom and group activities.
- Individual student planning: School counselors coordinate ongoing systemic activities designed to assist students in establishing personal goals and developing future plans.
- Responsive services: Responsive services are activities designed to meet students’ immediate needs and concerns. Responsive services may include counseling in individual or small-group settings or responding to crisis situations.
- College and Career Readiness: Students are provided with the opportunity to explore the world of work in relationship to the student’s individual interests, skills, work ethic, and post-secondary choices. Specifically, the eighth-grade students participate in a Career Exploration Day with local business and professional community leaders.
- High School Transition: As students exit the Franklin Special School District after the eighth grade, they enter a Williamson County high school, depending on their zone. The FSSD’s two feeder schools are Franklin High School and Centennial High School. It is important that this transition from school to school and system to system be as seamless as possible. The FSSD works closely with the Williamson County middle and high school directors to ensure our students are ready for a positive high school career. In addition, the FSSD eighth-grade teachers and counselors often meet with the county’s high school teachers to share curriculum and preparedness strategies.
Indirect Student Services are also included in the school counseling curriculum. These services are provided on behalf of students as a result of the school counselors’ interactions with others. Indirect student services include referrals for additional assistance, consultation and collaboration with parents, teachers, other educators and community organizations.
Franklin Special School District School Counseling Program
The FSSD school counseling program is implemented within the framework of the Tennessee Model for Comprehensive School Counseling. The Tennessee Model of Comprehensive School Counseling reflects the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Standards for School Counseling Programs and the ASCA National Model: A Framework for School Counseling Programs. Character education is incorporated throughout the Counseling Program at all grade levels.Counselors will keep parents informed of the topics to be taught through newsletters, school website, etc. Parents who have questions or comments about curriculum content should contact the counselor at the school where their children attend.
Group counseling topics vary from school to school depending on assessed needs. Some of the topics included in group counseling are: newcomers, divorce, socialization, test anxiety, Stand Tall (boys group), grief, friendships, conflict resolution, choices (decision-making), self-esteem, Move-to-Stand (anti-bullying), and peer mediation.
Individual counseling services are provided on an as-needed basis per request. Students, teachers, parents, and/or administrators may request individual counseling for a student.
To evaluate the effectiveness of the school counseling program in measurable terms, school counselors analyze data to determine how students are different as a result of the school counseling program. School counselors use data to show the impact of the school counseling program on student achievement, attendance and behavior and to guide future action and improve future results for all students. To assist in the annual evaluation of counseling services, parents will be asked to participate in a survey near the end of the school year. Responses will be valuable in ensuring that we maintain a program of services that meets the needs of all children.
